The process of winemaking kick starts with the selection of grapes, which undergo a variety of processes before they are bottled as finished wine. Contrary to the belief that grapes were the only source of wine, there are some fruits and non-toxic plant material which can also yield wine. Water is the prime ingredient in wine; however mead is a type of wine with honey in major proportions next to water.

Still wine production, a process that comes without carbonation and sparkling wine production that comes with carbonation are the two major classifications to wine making. In order to get good quality grapes one has to observe factors like weather during the growing season, soil minerals and acidity, time of harvest and pruning method, which would in turn yield good quality wine. To preserve wine and also to prevent unwanted fermentation in the bottle, a final dose of sulphite is added during bottling. My next post will be about, home wine making kit.
