Grey Gardens was an old 28-room mansion in a wealthy neighborhood in New York. Big and Little Edie Beale, aunt and cousin of Jackie Onassis, lived a filthy life in the mansion for nearly 50 years until they finally decided to renovate it. The Grey Gardens name is due to the grey exteriors and the mist surrounding it. The Health Department tried to make them leave the house several times because of sanitation issues, without success. When Big Edie Beale died, Little Edie Beale sold Grey Gardens. There’s a documentary and even a Broadway musical about grey gardens.
